the edible street
We advocate for community gardens right in the heart of the city. Imagine your garden not being far away, but right outside your door – maybe even in the middle of the street! This way, your street can become a green gathering place.
Our goal is a “street of tomorrow”: a place where people come together, feel at home, and enjoy nature. A street that hums and blooms – the Edible Street.
how it all started
It all began with an idea – the desire to create a piece of nature and joy right outside our doorsteps. In the spring of 2022, Katharina Schütze and Sandra Zangerl set out to bring this vision to life.
By the autumn of 2022, the first raised beds were in place on Swinemünder Street in Berlin Wedding. They found their home on the median strip, nestled between the hedges, and were lovingly named the “Germ Cell” (Keimzelle). In 2023, we officially founded the association Essbare Straße e.V. to help our idea grow even further! Today, alongside the “Germ Cell,” we also have the “Boulegarten.”
Our Goals
We grow edible plants for both people and animals right in the heart of the city. Raised beds for people, blooming meadows for insects.
We promote a sense of community that invites everyone – regardless of background, culture, or language.
We aim to raise awareness of environmental issues and sustainability.
We want to inspire people to get involved and show them that they can make a difference.
Together, we are creating the “street of tomorrow” today.
